The Stetson sand volleyball team opened its 2014 season with a pair of wins Friday, defeating Tulane 4-1 and Warner 5-0 at the Stetson Spring Break Tournament.

Senior Kaley Melville and freshman Kaylee Anderson won a pair of matches at the no. 1 seed, while junior Savannah Byl and sophomore Madison Tormey also picked up two wins on the day.

"I think we performed really well," interim head coach Meghan Bryant said. "For the first day we had our ups and downs, but every single team we had contributed to the win in the some way. The best thing about it is when we were down, we pushed back and found a way to win."

One pair that battled back from a big deficit was Byl and Tormey, who posted a 2-1 victory against Tulane at the no. 3 seed. After falling behind 1-0, the Hatter duo won the second set 21-19, but then fell behind again 13-7 in the decisive third set.

"It was our first game of the season, and we were a little nervous," Tormey said. "As a pair we decided we are not going to lose this game."

Byl and Tormey closed the gap to 14-11 and staved off three match points before pulling out a 17-15 win.

"It all started with the serving," Byl said. "Maddie went back there and said to me, 'I got this.' She turned around she probably aced three in a row."

Bryant was extremely pleased with the pair's performance.

"It was really big for them to not only get a run to take the lead back but once they switched sides to keep pushing for more," Bryant said.

In defeating Tulane, the Hatters got redemption for a loss suffered in New Orleans last year.

"(Our players) know how every out-of-conference game and win can contribute to our bid to go to nationals, and that is what they all want," Bryant said. "They want the A-Sun Championship and they want to go to nationals."

Stetson also swept Warner in all five matches to improve to 2-0 on the season.

The Hatters will host a pairs tournament on Saturday beginning at 9 a.m.
