Orange Park, Fla. – The Stetson University women’s golf team was unable to make up any ground on the leaders Sunday at the JMU/Eagle Landing Invitational and finished 12th in the 16-team event.
Battling wind gusts in excess of 30 miles per hour, senior Ryan Ashburn powered her way to a three-over par 75 in the final round to earn a top 20 finish. Ashburn finished the tournament with a nine-over par total of 225. That left Ashburn 10 strokes behind tournament medalist Tiffany Chin from Daytona State, who was the only player to complete the tournament under par.
Elon took team honors. The Phoenix were the only team to break 300 on Sunday. Their 299 was enough to rally past Georgia State for a four-shot victory. Elon finished with a team score of 892 while the Panthers finished with an 896 in second. Delaware (899) was the only other team to break 900 for the weekend and finished third.
Stetson’s 310 on Sunday left the Hatters in 12th place, five shots behind Morehead State and six behind host James Madison for a top 10 finish.
Behind Ashburn, senior Jenna Hoecker finished 34th overall. Hoecker posted a six-over par 78 on Sunday to finish with a 228 for the weekend. She was two shots ahead of senior Sammi Smith, who finished tied for 39th after a final round 77.
Senior Claudia Redinger finished with an 80 on Sunday to tie for 63rd at 240. Freshman Giulia Vandenberg posted a third consecutive 82 in the final round and finished tied for 80th with a final score of 246.
The Hatters will be right back in action this weekend when they compete in the Morehead State Invitational Tournament. That event is scheduled to be played March 23-25 at Juliette Falls Golf Club in Ocala.
