Fernandina Beach, Fla. – The Stetson University women’s golf team bounced back from a disappointing opening round at the JU Amelia Island Collegiate on Monday to post a solid score of 295 in the second round.

The event, which is being played at Amelia Island Golf Club, will conclude on Tuesday with a single round of competition.

The Hatters struggled out of the gate in their first event of the spring, with the five senior team members combining for 24 bogeys, four double bogeys and four triple bogeys against just 10 birdies.

Sammi Smith led the Hatters, who had a combined score of 310 in the opening round, with a three-over par score of 75. She followed that with a one-over par 73 in the second round for a 148 total on the day, good for a tie for 18th place on the leader board.

The Hatters’ 310 in the opening round placed the team in a deep hole against the tournament leaders. Florida International scorched the course for an 11-under par 277 to take a 13 stroke lead over second place Kennesaw State. Both of those teams posted six-under par scores of 282 in the second round to distance themselves from the rest of the field.

Jacksonville, which opened with a 304, bounced back with a score of 285 in the second round, but the Dolphins trail the leading Panthers by 30 shots entering Tuesday’s final round.

Stetson’s 295 in the second round kept the Hatters in the top 10 in the 14-team event and, with a strong finish, the team has an outside shot at a top five finish in the tournament. Stetson (605) is 11 shots behind Winthrop (594) for fifth place with James Madison (595) and Jacksonville State (599) immediately ahead of them. Xavier (609) is just behind the Hatters.

FIU built a commanding lead on the play of three players. Camila Serrano, which opened as the Panthers’ No. 5 player, posted scores of 67 and 66 on Monday and has a four shot lead over Tiffany Chan (137) from Daytona State. FIU’s Sophie Godley (138) and Meghan MacLaren (140) hold down third and fourth on the leaderboard while Kennesaw State’s Kaew Preamchuen (141) is fifth.

Behind Smith, Mallory Viera (149), whose round of 70 in the second round was the best of the day for the Hatters, is tied for 21st place. Ryan Ashburn (150) bounced back with an even par 72 in the second round and is tied for 28th.

Claudia Redinger (162) is tied for 62nd while Jenna Hoecker (165) is tied for 69th. Freshman Alessandra Kutz (161), who is playing as an individual, had a two-over par 74 in the opening round, but struggled in the second round, finishing with an 87. She is in 61st place overall.

Play in the final round of the JU Amelia Island Collegiate is scheduled to begin at 8:30 a.m. Fans can track play in the event live at www.golfstat.com.
