Fort Myers, Fla. - The Stetson women's golf team turned in a 13-stroke improvement in its second loop around Pelican Preserve Golf Club in Monday's second round of the FIU Pat Bradley Invitational, carding a 10 over par 298 team score and moving up from ninth place to seventh after 36 holes. The Hatters are 33 over par overall with an opportunity to finish in the top five tomorrow.
Freshman Mallory Viera led the way for Stetson in the second round with an even par 72, placing her in a tie for 18th place overall at six over par with junior Lauren Cate (St. Augustine, Fla.), who shot her second consecutive 75. Freshman Sammi Smith (Louisville, Ky.) made a five-shot improvement on Monday, firing a strong 73 while freshman Ryan Ashburn (Largo, Fla.) and senior Alex Banham (Peterborough, England) also bettered their first round efforts, carding 78 and 82 respectively.
Daytona State's Mitsuki Katahira is well on her way to remaining undefeated in all 2010 tournaments as she sits at six under par with one round to go, four strokes ahead of her teammate Ericka Schneider. Chandra Alexander of tournament leader North Texas is in third place at even par.
UNT stands at 12 over par through 36 holes, good for a one-stroke lead over Daytona State in the team standings. Western Michigan is in third place at +18 with Maryland (+19), Cincinnati (+27) and tournament host FIU (+27) also leading the Hatters (+33). Slotting in behind Stetson are FGCU (+34), Florida Atlantic (+37), South Alabama (+42), Murray State (+47), Troy (+48), Oakland (+49), Drake (+80) and Bethune-Cookman (+88).
