Crystal River, Fla. - The Stetson women's golf team wrapped up play at the University of Cincinnati Spring Invitational on Sunday at Plantation Golf Resort, finishing fifth out of 23 squads at 44 over par for the weekend. Sophomore Alexandria Buelow (Palm City, Fla.) took fourth place individually at one over par while freshman Mallory Viera (Howey-in-the-Hills, Fla.) led Stetson on the day with a two over par 74.
Viera improved her score every day from 77 to 75 to 74 and tied for 16th place at 10 over par for 54 holes. Buelow was tied for the lead entering play but slipped slightly with a 75 and ended up six strokes behind medalist Briana Carlson of FGCU. Carlson shot five under par 67 on Sunday to come from behind and win the title.
Junior Lauren Cate (St. Augustine, Fla.) shot 81 in the final round and tied for 29th at 16 over par; freshman Sammi Smith (Louisville, Ky.) finished with a 79 while senior Alex Banham (Peterborough, England) carded an 85. Competing as an individual only, freshman Ryan Ashburn (Largo, Fla.) recorded her finest round of the season with a 74 to tie for 18th place overall at +11.
North Texas (+18) used a one over par 289 final round team score to claim a 13-stroke victory over runner-up Morehead State; Florida Southern took third at 33 over par with A-Sun rival Campbell (+43) narrowly edging the Hatters by one stroke for fourth place. Elon (+45), Houston Baptist (+52), Mercer (+54), Florida Atlantic (+62), host Cincinnati (+63), FGCU (+71), Marshall (+71), Ohio (+72), North Dakota State (+82), Seminole SCF (+85), UAB (+86), Rutgers (+90), Embry-Riddle (+91), Oakland (+96), McNeese State (+100), Seton Hall (+100), Eckerd (+136) and St. Andrews Presbyterian (no team score) also competed this weekend.
Stetson concludes the regular season April 4-6 at the World Golf Hall of Fame Classic in St. Augustine.
