North Charleston, S.C. - Senior Lauren Cate (St. Augustine, Fla.) fired a two under par 69, the best round of her college career, to lead the Stetson women's golf team to a tie for second place finish in the Wendy's Invitational at Coosaw Creek Country Club on Tuesday. Cate tied for third individually at four over par for 36 holes and the Hatters, who finished 42 over par for the tournament shot the lowest final round score (+16) in the 16-team field.
Cate had opened with a six over par 77 yesterday but charged all the way from 22nd place to third with her play on Tuesday. She and Appalachian State's Rumbidzai Masamvu tied at +4, three strokes behind co-medalists Allison Harper (Marshall) and Natalie Schmett (Jacksonville). Stetson junior Alexandria Buelow (Palm City, Fla.) turned in her customary strong finish as well, rising from 10th to fifth today on the strength of a one over par 72.
Sophomore Ryan Ashburn (Largo, Fla.) shot 75 in the final round to better her first round score by seven strokes and tie for 34th at 15 over par. Fellow sophomores Jenna Hoecker (Rochester, N.Y.) and Claudia Redinger (Durban, South Africa) finished with rounds of 84 and 92, respectively.
Marshall went wire-to-wire to claim the team title at 37 over par, five strokes ahead of the Hatters and UAB. Also competing this week were Appalachian State (+45), Wofford (+47), Bucknell (+51), host Charleston Southern (+52), Gardner-Webb (+53), Radford (+53), USC Beaufort (+60), Jacksonville (+63), Presbyterian (+66), Armstrong Atlantic (+73), Bethune-Cookman (+79), the Citadel (+92) and Towson (+93).
Stetson continues its fall season Sunday-Tuesday when it travels to Pelican Preserve GC in Fort Myers, Fla. for the FIU Pat Bradley Invitational.
