Ocala, Fla. - The Stetson women's golf team played solidly in the final round of its last regular season tournament, but was eclipsed by a red-hot Daytona State squad and finished second at the Morehead State Ocala Spring Invitational on Sunday. Freshman Alexandria Buelow (Palm City, Fla.) tied for second at two over par with senior Danielle Jackson (Seminole, Fla.) and freshman Anna Hancock (Lakeland, Fla.) joining her in the top five. Jackson was Stetson's low scorer on the day, shooting even par 72 at Juliette Falls Golf Club. The 72 tied for the second-lowest round in the 49-golfer field. Buelow and Hancock each tallied 74 with senior Lauren Darnell (Gainesville, Ga.) handing in the final counting card with a 77. Jackson and Hancock finished six over par for 54 holes and tied for fifth while Darnell tied for 19th at +16. Junior Alex Banham (Birmingham, England) shot 78 and tied for 34th place; sophomore Lauren Cate (St. Augustine, Fla.) competed as an individual and turned in a three over par 75 on Sunday to tie for 12th place at 13 over par overall. Daytona State blistered the course to the tune of an even par 288 to make up a two-stroke deficit to the Hatters, finish 22 over par and win by seven strokes over Stetson. The Hatters carded a respectable 297 team score on Sunday themselves. Florida Southern was a distant third at +48 with host Morehead State (+60), Charleston Southern (+65), South Alabama (+73), Saint Leo (+80) and Mercer (+88) completing the field. DSC's Mitsuki Katahira shot even par 72 in the final round and also finished the tournament at even par, winning by two strokes over Buelow and Olivia Higgins (Charleston Southern). Fellow Falcon Ashley Mooney finished with a tournament-low 69 to shoot up to fourth place (+4) with Hancock and Jackson two shots behind. Next up for Stetson will be the season-defining Atlantic Sun Conference Championships, held April 12-14 at Venetian Bay Golf Club in New Smyrna Beach, Fla. The Hatters (along with reigning individual medalist Jackson) will attempt to defend their 2009 conference championship and return to NCAA regionals for the second straight year.
