Stetson University junior Alexandria Buelow fell just short of breaking the school single-round scoring record in her final round last weekend. She made sure to shave one more shot off her score on Sunday.

Playing in the first round of the MSU Ocala Spring Invitational at Juliette Falls Golf Course, Buelow set a new school mark with a round of 67 on Sunday to take a two-shot lead. Stetson coach Floyd Kerr said Buelow is on quite a roll.

“She is playing very well right now,” Kerr said. “She could have gone one lower, but left a birdie putt on the lip on 18. We just need to get the others on the team to step up and give her some help.”

With Buelow leading the way, the Hatters are tied for fourth after the first round of play with a team score of 299. Murray State and Appalachian State share the early team lead after both squads posted opening round scores of 293. Host Morehead State is in third place with a 297.

Stetson is tied with Jacksonville State for fourth place and Kerr said he believes the tournament will come down to those two teams.

“I thought coming in that it would be between us and Jacksonville State, and I still think that will be the case,” Kerr said. “We just need to get some better play from the players at the bottom of our lineup.”

The Hatters got a 74 from Lauren Cate in the first round. She matched scores of 37 on each side. Claudia Redinger went out in 38 but finished with a 40 on the back side for a six-over 78.

Sammi Smith and Ryan Ashburn both finished the opening round with scores of 80. Ashburn struggled to a 43 on the back after playing the front side in 37.

Mallory Viera, who is playing in the event as an individual, finished Sunday’s round with a 74 after closing with a 34 on the back.

The Hatters will be back on the course Monday morning at 9 a.m. and will be paired with Jacksonville State and Florida Atlantic in the second round of the event.
