The Hatters put up a tournament low round of 292 on Monday to charge from six shots back to tie first round co-leader Murray State for the second round lead. The Racers followed their opening round score of 293 with a 298 on Monday.
The tournament’s other first round co-leader, Appalachian State, dropped back into a tie for third place with tournament host Morehead State, two shots behind the leaders, with a second round score of 300.
Stetson’s Alexander Buelow slipped back after a blistering opening round 67 with a one-over par 73 on Monday. Buelow is tied with Yue Xu of Appy State for the individual tournament lead at four under par.
Where the Hatters made serious strides on Monday was behind Buelow, where the rest of the Stetson starting five posted scores a combined 15 shots better than they did in the first round.
Headlining the Hatters round two scoring was senior Lauren Cate, who posted a two-under par score of 70 on Monday to move into contention near the top of the leader board. Cate is tied for fourth individually, four shots behind Buelow and Xu.
Sophomore Sammi Smith fired a one-over par 73 on Monday, a seven shot improvement, to move into the top 20 overall. Another sophomore, Claudia Redinger, posted a 76 on Monday and is one shot behind Smith in a tie for 22nd.
Sophomore Ryan Ashburn shot a 78 on Monday and is tied for 31st overall.
Playing as an individual, sophomore Mallory Viera has a chance at a top 10 finish after following an opening round 74 with a 73 on Monday. She will enter the final round of the tournament tied for 10th.
The Hatters are paired with Murray State and Morehead State for Tuesday’s final round, which is scheduled for an 8 a.m. shotgun start.
