Ponte Vedra Beach, Fla. – The Stetson women’s golf team left little room for doubt on Monday, racing out to a 21 stroke lead over their closest competition on the opening day of the Marsh Landing Invitational, hosted by Jacksonville University.

Led by junior Alexandria Buelow, who fired a second round 69 to build a five-shot lead over Cincinnati’s Andrea Malek, the Hatters posted team scores of 290 and 292 in the first two rounds. Only one other squad in the 10-team field posted a round under 300 on the day.

Cal Poly opened with a round of 298, but slipped back from second place to fourth with a 310 in the second round. Cincinnati followed an opening round 303 with a second round score of 300 to finish the day in second place.

Stetson sophomore Mallory Viera had a share of the tournament lead after a two-under par 70 in the opening round of play, but she slipped back into fourth after a second round 77. Viera is seven shots behind her teammate for the tournament lead.

Senior Lauren Cate also owns a spot in the top five after consecutive rounds of 74 on the first day of play. Sophomore Sammi Smith is tied for sixth, just one shot behind Cate, with a two-round score of 149.

Florida Atlantic’s Anna Wiklund is the only other non-Hatter in the top five entering the final round of play. She is six shots behind Buelow in third place after posting scores of 72 and 74 on Monday.

The tournament’s final round of play will start at 8 a.m. on Tuesday. The Hatters will be matched with players from Cincinnati and Jacksonville for the final round with tee times set to begin at 8:45 a.m.
