Ponte Vedra Beach, Fla. – The Stetson Hatters closed out their third team title of the year on Tuesday at the Marsh Landing Invitational, hosted by Jacksonville, led by junior Alexandria Buelow, who won for the fourth time this year.
Despite tough conditions on the Marsh Landing Country Club Course that inflated scores across the board, the Hatters saw all five team members post scores in the 70s in the final round, one of just two teams to reach that accomplishment. The result was a 13-stroke victory over second place Cal Poly, which was the only team to break 300, posting a 299 in the final round.
Buelow led the Hatters with a 77 to hold off hard-charging Jenna Birch of Armstrong Atlantic for the individual title. Birch had the low round of the day on Tuesday and was the only player to break par, shooting a two-under 70.
Stetson also had two other players finish in the top five at the event. Senior Lauren Cate closed with a final round score of 77 and finished fourth while sophomore Mallory Viera finished fifth after a final round score of 79.
Just half the players in the field managed to break 80 in the final round at the tournament.
Stetson sophomore Sammi Smith also recorded a top 10 finish, tying for eighth with a total score of 228. Sophomore Claudia Redinger finished tied for 29th overall.
The Hatters will look to defend their Atlantic Sun Conference title next week when the league championship is contested at Venetian Bay Golf Club in New Smyrna Beach. The teams will play practice rounds on Sunday before playing single rounds on Monday, Tuesday and Wednesday.
The event is open to the public.
