OCALA, Fla. – The Stetson University women’s golf held on to second place through the second day of play at the MSU Ocala Spring Invitational with a second straight sub-300 round on Monday.
The Hatters were, however, unable to make up ground on front running Mercer. The Bears posted a second round score of 291 to push their lead over Stetson and Toledo to 12 shots entering Tuesday’s final round.
After posting an opening round score of 297, the Hatters followed up on Monday with a 299. Toledo moved into a tie with Stetson after a second straight 298. Host Morehead State will enter the final round of play in fourth place, eight shots behind the Hatters and Rockets.
Mercer’s Lacey Fears moved into the lead in the individual tournament after posting a two-under par 70 in the second round. She is three-under par for the tournament at 141. Opening round leader Kara Brinkman of Ohio University slipped to second place, two shots off the lead, after a second round score of 74.
Ryan Ashburn leads the Hatters after another solid round on Monday. Her two-over par 74 gives her a two-day score of 147. Sammi Smith is tied for 13th after shooting a 76 in the second round.
Mallory Viera had the best round of the day for Stetson with a 73. Her round included the only Eagle of the tournament. She will enter the final round on Tuesday in 17th place.
Jenna Hoecker is tied for 35th after struggling to an 80 on Monday while Claudia Redinger bounced back with a 76 on Monday and is tied for 50th entering the final round of play.
Tuesday’s final round at the Juliette Falls Golf Club will begin at 8:15 a.m. with a shotgun start. The Hatters will be matched once again with the tournament leaders from Mercer and Toledo.
