JEKYLL ISLAND, Ga. – The Stetson Hatters had a chance to make a move up the leaderboard on Wednesday in the final day of play at the 2014 Atlantic Sun Conference Women’s Golf Championship, but struggled to close out the second round and fell from contention.

After rain halted play in the second round on Tuesday with several holes to play, the Hatters came out and were 14 over par over the last six holes of that round, finishing with a 25 over par score of 313. That trend continued as Stetson posted a final round score of 312 to finish seventh in the 10-team field, 36 shots behind tournament champion ETSU.

It is the second straight tournament title for the Buccaneers, who will represent the A-Sun in the NCAA Tournament. ETSU finished with a 297 on Wednesday after closing out a 299 in the second round. It was during that second round, after the weather delay, that ETSU put a move on top seed Mercer, taking a seven shot lead over the Bears into the final round of play.

Mercer slipped all the way to third with Kennesaw State finishing second, seven shots behind ETSU.

ETSU’s Vivienne Chin captured medalist honors in the event. A sophomore from Malaysia, Chin was consistent throughout the tournament, closing with a one-over par 73 in the final round for a total score of 219, two shots better than Jessica Welch of Jacksonville.

Stetson senior Jenna Hoecker led the Hatters, finishing 11th in her final A-Sun Championship. Hoecker closed the event with a 78 in the final round and finished with an 11-over par score of 227.

Mallory Viera also finished strong in her final A-Sun appearance. After tying for fourth place in 2013, Viera tied for 14th this year with a 13-over par score of 229. She finished on Wednesday with a 75, which was the best round of the day for the Hatters.

Senior Ryan Ashburn struggled on the final day, posting a score of 81 to finish in a tie for 27th with a total score of 234.

Freshman Alessandra Kutz had a score of 78 on Wednesday to finish tied for 35th overall at 242 and senior Claudia Redinger closed with an 84 to finish 49th with a score of 257.
