TAMPA, Fla. – The Stetson men’s soccer team lost its first game of the season on Monday night, falling to USF on the road by a score of 1-0. The Bulls converted on a penalty kick with just over 10 minutes remaining to earn their first win of 2013.
After shutting out UMass Lowell in the season opener on Friday, the Hatters continued their run of stingy defense for the first 79+ minutes of Monday’s non-conference contest. It wasn’t until a foul in the box gave USF a penalty that senior goalkeeper Andreas Schnabl gave up a score.
The Bulls’ Edwin Moalosi stepped to the line to take the kick, scored it, and gave USF the late advantage. Stetson couldn’t even it up in the final 10 minutes of action, falling by the final score of 1-0.
“I was very pleased with the amount of effort everyone put in tonight,” Stetson head coach T. Logan Fleck said. “The back four and Andy (Schnabl) played really well. Unfortunately we gave up a late goal and we needed to get one to the draw. We saw some players starting to play for each other tonight though.”
USF outshot the Hatters 9-5 overall and landed three on target to Stetson’s two. The Bulls were also able to create four corner kicks, while the Hatters recorded no corners.
Schnabl finished with two saves, matching the total of USF’s Brentton Muhammad.
Stetson will continue the 2013 season next Sunday. The Hatters host Grand Canyon at 7:00 p.m. at the Athletic Training Center. The game will be streamed live on Hatter Vision.
