DeLAND—Officially on the job less than two weeks, first-year Stetson men’s soccer head coach Ernie Yarborough gets his first look at the 2014 Hatters when they host Florida Southern in an exhibition match, 7 p.m., Tuesday at the Athletic Training Center practice field.

Yarborough, who took over following the death of former head coach T. Logan Fleck in late July, arrived on campus for his first day of work on August 8. Since then, he’s hired a coaching staff and welcomed a team of 25 players to DeLand. He’s looking forward to seeing his team in action.

“It will be nice to get on the field and see where we are,” said Yarborough. “It’s time to face off against an opponent and get a true sense of our talents and abilities. Training has been great so far. Our effort has been fantastic. We are still evaluating players in terms talent and trying to learn what we have. There’s a certain way we want to play moving forward, but that will come as we learn more about our team.”

The Hatters were recently picked to finish sixth in the Atlantic Sun Conference preseason poll. Stetson returns 12 letterwinners from last season’s team which posted a 3-10-4 overall record. Headlining the returnees is preseason all-conference selection JJ Bostic. The senior defender had two goals and assist last season on his way to second-team all-league honors.

Florida Southern, an NCAA Division II school located in Lakeland, was 5-8-2 a season ago.

The Hatters host their second and final exhibition game at 7 p.m., Saturday, August 23 against Florida Tech. Stetson opens the regular season August 29 against Elon at the Duke/Nike Invitational in Durham, N.C.
