Nashville, Tenn. - The Stetson men's soccer team improved to 4-2-1 overall and 1-0-0 in Atlantic Sun Conference play with a 1-0 victory at Belmont in the Hatters' league opener this afternoon in Nashville. Gonzalo de Mujica (Buenos Aires, Argentina) tallied the game's only goal on a penalty kick.
"It was a bit of an ugly win but we'll take it... In conference every three points counts", said Stetson defender Dan Sackman following the game. "Belmont is a gritty team and can be tough to break down. We had our chances early on and kept at it until the penalty came late."
In the 72nd minute Stetson's midfield broke through the Bruin defense and slipped the ball into Kai Eckenrode (Springfield, Va.). Jonathan Mendoza (Bogata, Columbia) ran around a defender and picked up a one touch before being knocked over in the box by the goalkeeper. The foul resulted in the penalty kick and the Stetson victory.
"The keeper didn't have much of a choice it was either going to be a goal or a penalty kick", said Sackman.
Stetson finished with a 21-15 advantage in shots and 9-3 in corner kick opportunities. Goalkeeper Andreas Schnabl made three saves and along with the Stetson back four earned their 3rd shutout of the season.
Next up for the Hatters is a 3:00 p.m. eastern time game against Lipscomb on Sunday up in Nashville.
