DeLand, Fla. - The Atlantic Sun Conference office has announced that Stetson's Jonathan Mendoza has been named the league's Offensive Player of the Week for the week ending October 3rd, 2010. Mendoza earned the award after an impressive effort over the weekend in Nashville.
In Stetson's 1-0 win over Belmont Friday night Mendoza keyed the play that gave Stetson a penalty kick in the 72nd minute. Inside the box he made a move that forced the Bruins goalkeeper to either take him down and risk a penalty kick or give up a sure goal. Gonzalo de Mujica was successful with the PK sending the Hatters away with the win.
On Friday Mendoza exploded for two goals and two assists in Stetson's 4-0 win at Lipscomb. Mendoza's six points on the weekend vaulted him into the league lead in scoring with 14 points. He also currently leads the A-Sun in assists with eight and is second in game-winning goals with two. Last season as a freshman he tied for the top spot in game-winners with three.
With the pair of wins in Nashville the Hatters are now tied atop the A-Sun standings with a 2-0-0 mark. Stetson, last season's league tournament champion, was selected to win the conference regular season and post-season titles in 2010.
Mendoza, a Bogata, Colombia native, lives in Altamonte Springs, Florida and played high school soccer at Lyman. He earned All-Freshman Team honors for Stetson in 2009 and was named to the A-Sun Preseason All-Conference Team this season.
