DeLand, Fla. - The Atlantic Sun Conference released the 2010 men's soccer all-conference teams today and Stetson had five players honored for their outstanding play including Fredrik Brustad who was voted as the league's Player of the Year. The Atlantic Sun all-conference teams are voted on by the league's head coaches.
Joining Brustad on the All-Conference First Team is senior defender Ryan Corning (Ponte Vedra, Fla.) and sophomore midfielder Jonathan Mendoza (Bogata, Colombia). Junior midfielder Gonzalo de Mujica (Buenos Aires, Argentina) earned second team honors and goalkeeper Andreas Schnabl (Blaichach, Germany) was voted to the All-Freshman Team.
Heading into this week's championship tournament Brustad is tied for the league lead in scoring with 20 points. The junior midfielder out of Oslo, Norway also leads the A-Sun in points per game (1.25), is second in goals scored (7) and goals per game (0.44), and is tied for fourth in assists (6). A first team selection last year as well, Brustad was picked as this year's Preseason Player of the Year.
Fredrik Brustad is the first Hatter in the history of the program to earn the A-Sun Player of the Year honor. Last season Robert Hodge became Stetson's first-ever Defensive Player of the Year.
"The award is well deserved", said Stetson head coach T. Logan Fleck. "Freddy has shown his value to us and it is nice to see that the other coaches in the conference have noticed his abilities as well."
Corning is the team's back line anchor and has led the Hatters to a 0.76 goals against average and five shutouts. Stetson has allowed only 13 goals on the season and has given up more than one goal just twice (2 vs. Furman and 2 vs. UCF).
In his second season of college soccer Mendoza has already become one of the top offensive threats in the conference. He was All-Freshman and All-Tournament Team last season, was named to the Preseason All-Conference Team this season, and is now a First Team All-Conference member. He currently leads the A-Sun in assists with 11 and is tied for 6th in scoring with 17 points. Mendoza was named the A-Sun Player of the Week on October 4 after scoring a pair of goals and adding two assists in Stetson's win over Lipscomb.
As a center midfielder and team captain de Mujica has led Stetson to a number two league ranking in defense and the number one spot on offense. The 'Maestro of the Midfield' conducts the flow of play in the midfield, defends well, and moves forward as a key scoring threat. He is currently tied for 10th in the A-Sun in goals scored with five, and is tied for second in the league in game-winners with three.
Freshman Andy Schnabl is already one of the top goalkeepers in the A-Sun. He has started every game but one and directed the second-ranked defense in the league from day one. Heading into the tournament he is second in the conference in goals against average (0.71) and saves percentage (.784), and is 5th in shutouts with four.
As the #2 seed in the upcoming A-Sun Tournament Stetson has the week off while preparing to take on the winner of the #6 Jacksonville vs. #3 Mercer quarterfinal game. The semifinal and championship games will take place November 11 and 13 in Johnson City, Tennessee. All-Atlantic Sun Championship Tournament games are available free of charge at www.atlanticsun.org.
