Spartanburg, S.C. - Senior midfielder Gonzalo de Mujica (Buenos Aires, Argentina) put home a penalty kick goal with 47 seconds remaining in the first overtime period to lift the Stetson men's soccer team (5-5-2, 2-1-1 Atlantic Sun) to a key 3-2 conference victory Sunday afternoon at USC Upstate (5-7-1, 2-3-1 A-Sun). Freshman midfielder Elias Beates (Winter Park, Fla.) scored his first career goal for the Hatters as well.

Junior defender Luis Ocejo (Mexico City, Mexico) got the match off to a great start for Stetson almost immediately as he scored in the third minute as a corner kick was backheeled to Ocejo, who put it home for the 1-0 lead. Sophomore midfielder Steven Saballos (Miami, Fla.) and junior midfielder Jonathan Mendoza (Bogota, Colombia) assisted on that goal.

Jan Wienholt's first goal of the season tied the match for the Spartans in the 17th minute; Timo Foerster and Dave Musambi assisted on that goal and also did the same on Derek Dearmond's 22nd minute goal that put the home team ahead 2-1. Dearmond's first goal of the year came off a 40-yard cross.

The scoring in the first half wasn't done yet as Beates took a Mendoza pass and beat Spartans goalkeeper Jason McCabe for his first collegiate goal in the 39th minute.

The remainder of the half and the entire second half would pass without further scoring, and it appeared the first overtime would do the same, but at the 99:13 mark, the referee called USC Upstate for a foul inside the box, leading to an automatic penalty kick attempt. De Mujica stepped to the spot and delivered the walkoff win on his third goal of the year. The Hatters have gone to overtime three matches in a row and four times in their last five outings; they are 2-0-2 in those situations over that span and 2-1-2 on the year in extra time.

Stetson dominated the shot count 28-6 as sophomore goalkeeper Andreas Schnabl (Blaichach, Germany) needed to make only one save on the afternoon. McCabe did a terrific job keeping his Spartans in the match, recording 11 saves.

The Hatters return home next weekend to host Belmont (7:00 pm Friday) and Lipscomb (12:00 pm Sunday) in A-Sun action. Live Stats and Hatter Vision will be available at GoHatters.com.
