DeLand, Fla. - Following a home sweep of Belmont and Lipscomb in Atlantic Sun Conference action this past weekend, the A-Sun named Stetson juniors Jonathan Mendoza (Bogota, Colombia) and Luis Ocejo (Mexico City, Mexico) Player of the Week and Defensive Player of the Week, respectively. This is the second such award of the season for Mendoza (third of his career) and the first of Ocejo's career.
Mendoza scored three of Stetson's five goals this weekend, including both game-winners. He scored early in the match Friday evening vs. Belmont to spark the Hatters to a 2-0 win and then scored twice early in the second half Sunday afternoon to break open a 1-1 tie with Lipscomb and vault Stetson to a 3-1 victory. Mendoza now leads the Atlantic Sun Conference with nine goals and 22 points on the season; he shared A-Sun Player of the Week honors with ETSU's Alesi Osorio on September 6.
Ocejo led a strong Stetson defensive effort all weekend that held the dangerous Belmont and Lipscomb offenses to just one goal combined in 180 minutes; he also led the charge in keeping two of the A-Sun's leading scorers entering the weekend, Belmont's Brandon Tarr and Lipscomb's Garrett Pettis, without a single shot attempt between them.
The Hatters, unbeaten in their last five matches and now 7-5-2 overall and 4-1-1 in the A-Sun, clinched an A-Sun tournament berth with Sunday's victory and gave Head Coach T. Logan Fleck his 50th victory at Stetson faster than any other coach in program history.
Stetson hosts a nationally-ranked team for the first time in 14 years Tuesday evening when #11 UCF visits the Stetson Soccer Complex at 7:00 pm. Live Stats and Hatter Vision are available at GoHatters.com.
