Jacksonville, Fla. - The Stetson men's soccer team (8-5-3, 5-1-1 Atlantic Sun) extended its unbeaten streak to seven matches with a 2-0 win at A-Sun rival North Florida (1-14-0, 0-7-0 A-Sun) Friday evening at Hodges Stadium. Senior forward Joakim Helland (Bergen, Norway) scored both goals for the Hatters as they climbed into a tie for second in the A-Sun standings and kept their chances for a regular season conference title alive.
Stetson needed less than a minute to seize the lead for good as junior midfielder Jonathan Mendoza (Bogota, Colombia) intercepted an Osprey pass and slotted one through to Helland to finish from 15 yards to the far post. A similar play in the 30th minute made it 2-0 as this time, Helland stole the ball himself and connected a 15-yarder past UNF goalkeeper Federico Bertele. The goals were the third and fourth of the season for Helland, moving him into second place on the team behind Mendoza in goals scored.
The Hatters had numerous chances to add onto their lead in the second half but Bertele and the Ospreys defense did yeoman's work to keep the home side in the match until the final buzzer sounded. Bertele made two saves on the night. For the Hatters, sophomore Andreas Schnabl (Blaichach, Germany) made one save in the first half before giving way to senior Dan Billman (Troy, Mo.) for the second half; Billman made one save and preserved the team shutout.
Stetson, which has yet to drop a match in the month of October, will finish its conference slate with a 7:00 pm Sunday match at Jacksonville. The Hatters and Dolphins are tied for second in the league with 16 points, two behind leader FGCU. Stetson can clinch at least a first round bye in the upcoming A-Sun tournament with a victory.
