DeLand, Fla. - Stetson junior midfielder Jonathan Mendoza (Bogota, Colombia) picked up an unprecedented award late Friday night as he was named a Third Team All-American by the National Soccer Coaches Association of America (NSCAA). Mendoza, the Atlantic Sun Conference Player of the Year, is the first All-American in program history.

Mendoza led the A-Sun in scoring with 27 points on a league-high 11 goals plus five assists in 2011, adding Atlantic Sun All-Tournament Team honors to his A-Sun Player of the Year trophy. Earlier this week he was named to the NSCAA All-South Region First Team, qualifying him for All-America selection. Mendoza was one of 35 student-athletes from 25 different NCAA Division I men's soccer programs named to the NSCAA's three All-America squads. These 35 winners will be honored at a January 14 luncheon held at the NSCAA Convention in Kansas City, Mo.

"This is a tremendous honor, not only for Jonny, but for our school and program, even more so because it comes from the coaches that saw him play," Hatters head coach T. Logan Fleck said. "As terrific a player as he is on the field, he's an even more special person off the pitch. Jonny is a class act and a great representative of Stetson University. I can't wait to see what the future holds for him."

Mendoza scored multiple goals in three different matches, including in a come-from-behind win over then 15th-ranked Penn State on September 2 in Columbus, Ohio. He had five goals in Stetson's season-ending 10-match unbeaten streak that the Hatters will carry into 2012; Stetson finished the 2011 season 10-5-4 overall and 6-1-1 in the Atlantic Sun, good for second place in the A-Sun standings.
