DeLand, Fla. - The National Soccer Coaches Association of America (NSCAA) unveiled its Scholar All-America and Scholar All-Region Teams for the 2011 season earlier this week and the high achievements of Stetson men's soccer individuals on the field and in the classroom were prominently recognized. Junior defender Luis Ocejo (Mexico City, Mexico) and senior midfielder Gonzalo de Mujica (Buenos Aires, Argentina) were named Third Team Scholar All-Americans and First Team All-South Region Scholars while senior forward Joakim Helland (Bergen, Norway) earned All-South Region Honorable Mention.

Ocejo, a Finance major, and de Mujica, an International Business major, advanced to the national Scholar All-America squad on the strength of their First Team All-South accolades. The Atlantic Sun Conference Defensive Player of the Year and First Team All-Atlantic Sun Hatters team captain, respectively, the duo were both named to the NSCAA All-South Region Third Team earlier this month purely for on-field reasons. Ocejo anchored a Stetson back line that registered six shutouts in 19 matches while scoring two goals and handing out three assists. De Mujica ranked second on the team in scoring (behind only NSCAA Third Team All-American and A-Sun Player of the Year Jonathan Mendoza) with 17 points on five goals and seven assists.

Helland, also a Finance major, was Stetson's fourth-leading scorer with five goals and two assists in 2011. He played in all 19 matches with 11 starts up top and was instrumental in Stetson's 10-match unbeaten streak to end the year that will carry over into the 2012 campaign. The Hatters went 10-5-4 overall and 6-1-1 in A-Sun action, finishing second in the league standings.

These three scholar-athletes helped lead a team-wide scholar effort that made Stetson a NSCAA All-Academic Team earlier this month for the second year in a row. Ocejo and de Mujica were the only Scholar All-Americans from the Atlantic Sun Conference; Stetson's three Scholar All-South honorees led all A-Sun institutions.
