|Hatters Drop Game and Split Season Series with Seminoles|
DeLand, Fla. - No. 14 Stetson (37-11, 20-4 A-Sun) had trouble getting its offense going and fell 13-1 to No. 6 Florida State Tuesday night in front of 2,815 fans at Melching Field. It was the 6th largest crowd ever at the Hatters' home ballpark.
The victory allowed the Seminoles to split the season series at one game apiece. Earlier this season Stetson defeated FSU 6-4 on March 23 in Tallahassee.
Florida State struck first with a run in the top of the 2nd inning before Stetson evened the score in the bottom of the 3rd. Freshman Kyle Zech (Naples, Fla.) led off the inning with a double to right center and advanced to third on a groundout to the right side by Jeff Simpson (Valrico, Fla.). The next batter Robert Crews (Port Charlotte, Fla.) laced a single up the middle and the game was tied.
Unfortunately for the many Hatters fans in attendance Stetson was not able to get the key hits it needed to generate more runs. The Hatters ended up leaving 11 runners on base in the game. Stetson totaled six hits with Zech's double being the only one that went for extra bases.
FSU added 11 more runs including four in the 7th inning and five in the 8th.
Stetson closer Robbie Powell (Punta Gorda, Fla.) started his first game at the collegiate level and pitched quite well. He tossed four innings allowing two runs on two hits and struck out three Seminoles. He took the loss and fell to 5-2 on the season. It was Powell who gave an extraordinary effort and earned the win over FSU in the first matchup of the season.
The Hatters will return to Melching Field to take on Florida International Wednesday at 5:30 p.m. Stetson fans can see the game on Hatter Vision at GoHatters.com with Bill Topping calling the action. Tickets for home games are available at the gate or can be purchased online at GoHatters.com or by calling 738-HATS.
