At approximately 4:45 p.m. on Friday, lightening chased the Hatters from the field during batting practice. Because the the frequent lightening strikes, the team did not have time to get the tarp over the infield.
At about 5:15 p.m. and severe thunderstorm passed over the stadium, dumping several inches of rain mixed with dime sized hail and 40-to-50 miles per hour wind gusts. The playing surface at Melching Field was quickly under water, making the field unplayable.
Coaches for Stetson and Florida Gulf Coast will meet at the stadium at 8 a.m. on Saturday to determine how long it will take to get to get the field into playing shape, with the hope of starting a double-header by 11 a.m.
Stetson will mark Senior Day on Saturday, with 11 seniors scheduled to be recognized. The Hatters still need one victory to officially clinch a berth in the Atlantic Sun Conference Tournament. That event is scheduled to start on Wednesday, May 23, with games at 11 a.m., 3 p.m. and 7 p.m. at Melching Field.
