DeLAND—Stetson scored six runs in the first two innings and held on for a 6-3 win against Florida A&M, Wednesday at Melching Field.

Stetson (9-16) started strong, scoring all six runs and collecting seven of their nine hits in the first two innings.

“I thought we did a great job at the plate in the first two innings.” said head coach Pete Dunn. “We didn’t go up there and over-swing, and we weren’t overly aggressive when it was obvious they were having trouble throwing strikes. But, for some reason, after the third inning we started trying to do too much. I’m very happy with the win, but we’re lucky we held on.”

Freshman Mitchell Jordan (1-3) picked up his first collegiate victory by scattering seven hits and allowing one earned run in four innings. Jordan, who was on a pre-determined innings limit, struck out three batters and walked just one.

“Mitchell gave us everything he had tonight,” said Dunn. “He pitched on Saturday at East Tennessee State and threw over 50 pitches. Tonight he threw almost 90 pitches. He gave us a good performance on the front side of the game.”

The Hatters (9-16) opened the scoring with four runs in the first inning. Shortstop Tyler Bocock started the frame with a double and scored when Patrick Mazeika followed with an RBI double into the left-center field gap.

Stetson loaded the bases with none out in the first and designated hitter Kyle Zech knocked in Mazeika with a single to right for a 2-0 lead. Stetson’s third scored on a double play grounder and the fourth and final run of the inning scored on an RBI single by third baseman Kyle Pitts.

The Rattlers (7-16) plated a pair of runs in the top of the second. Jeremy Barlow made it 4-1 with an RBI double, and Jared Walker’s squeeze bunt scored cut Stetson’s lead to 4-2.

Stetson rebounded with a pair of runs in the bottom of the second. First baseman Josh Powers had an RBI single and Zech added his second run-scoring single of the night for a 6-2 lead.

Walker’s RBI single in the sixth put Florida A&M within 6-3, but the Rattlers collected just one hit over the final three innings.

Tyler Warmoth closed the game with three shutout innings for the Hatters, earning his fifth save of the year in the process. The sophomore allowed one hit and struck out two.

“I hated that we had to leave Tyler out there for three innings because we’ll need him this weekend,” said Dunn. “But he got the job done for us.

Zech, Bocock and Pitts each had a pair of hits. Bocock scored twice and Zech knocked in two runs.

Walker had a pair of hits for Florida A&M. Starting pitcher Matt Schaeffer (0-1) took the loss for FAMU.

The Hatters return to action when they host Atlantic Sun Conference leader Florida Gulf Coast for three games this weekend, beginning 6:30 p.m., Friday, at Melching Field.
