HIGHLAND HEIGHTS, Ky.—Northern Kentucky combined for 24 runs and 29 hits en route to sweeping an Atlantic Sun Conference doubleheader from Stetson, winning the opening game, 16-8, and taking the nightcap by an 8-0 score, Saturday at Bill Aker Baseball Complex.

The sweep improved NKU to 10-18 overall and 4-4 in A-Sun play. Stetson drops to 12-20 and 2-6.

The Hatters got on the board in the top of the first. Consecutive two-out singles from Patrick Mazeika, Garrett Russini and Josh Powers gave Stetson a 1-0 lead.

But the lead was short-lived. Northern Kentucky tied it with a run in the bottom of the first and took a 2-1 lead on a solo home run by Dominic Faron in the bottom of the second.

The Norse took control of the game in the third, scoring four runs in the inning on four hits and an error. When the dust settled, NKU led 6-1.

Stetson closed to within 6-2 in the top of the fourth on an RBI groundout by Tyler Bocock, but NKU exploded for five runs in the bottom of the inning and led 11-2 after four innings of play.

The Hatters got back in the game in the top of the seventh as Mike Fernland and Powers sandwiched two-run homers around a two-run double by Russini, making it 11-8. But the Stetson bullpen surrendered five runs in the final two innings to make a late rally nearly impossible.

Austin Perez (0-5) suffered the loss for Stetson after allowing 10 runs (nine earned) on 11 hits.

The 3-4-5 combo of Mazeika, Russini and Powers went 7-for-13 with three doubles, a homer and five RBI. Fernland was 2-for-4 with two RBI.

Game two of the doubleheader started much like the first game ended – with NKU scoring runs. Stetson also assisted the Norse by committing five errors and leaving nine runners on base.

With freshman Mitchell Jordan on the mound for the Hatters, the Norse took an early 1-0 lead on a solo home run by Logan Spurlin in the top of the first. NKU made it 3-0 with a pair of runs in the second inning, including an unearned run.

NKU scored another unearned run in the third inning when Zac Asman opened the frame with a single, stole second and advanced to third on a throwing error by Mazeika at catcher. Asman scored on a ground out by Kyle Coletta, giving the Norse a 4-0 lead.

NKU tacked on two more runs in the bottom of the fifth and a single run in the sixth and seventh innings to make it 8-0.

Stetson had its chances. The Hatters put the lead-off batter on base in five straight innings, beginning in the fourth. But in each case the Hatters failed to capitalize, twice grounding into inning-ending double plays.

Four pitchers combined on the shutout for the Norse. Starting pitcher Wendell Wright (2-2) got the win, tossing six shutout innings, allowing four hits.

Jordan (2-4) suffered the loss for Stetson, allowing seven runs (five earned) on seven hits in five innings.

Mazeika, Russini, Powers and Smith each had one hit for the Hatters.

Stetson and Northern Kentucky warp up their three-game series Sunday at noon.
