Five members of the Stetson baseball team were named to the 2012 Atlantic Sun Conference All-Conference team, the league announced on Tuesday. The Hatters also placed four players on the leagues’ Academic All-Conference squad.

The Hatters placed a pair of players – senior closer Robbie Powell and senior shortstop Mark Jones – on the first team and two more – junior catcher Sam Kimmel and senior third baseman Ben Carhart – on the second team. Freshman pitcher Josh Powers was named to the league’s All-Freshman squad.

Powell, a native of Punta Gorda, Fla., has tied the A-Sun season record for saves and enters this week’s A-Sun Tournament at Melching Field in DeLand just one save behind the national co-leaders. In 29 appearances this year, Powell has a 1-0 record with a 2.70 ERA.

Jones, a native of Bunnell, Fla., battled back from an early season hitting slump, and enters play this week third on the team with a .313 average while leading the Hatters with five home runs. He is second on the team with 35 runs batted in and is tied for the team lead with 10 stolen bases.

Carhart, a native of Royal Palm Beach, leads the Hatters in both hitting (.339) and runs batted in (36) and has started every game this year at third base. He is second on the club with four homers and leads the team 1ith 103 total bases.

Kimmel, a native of West Palm Beach, is in his first season at Stetson and has been a versatile player for the Hatters. He has primarily served as the Stetson catcher, but has also played in left field and at first base. Of late, he has been the Hatters’ leadoff hitter. For the year he is second to Carhart with a .332 batting average.

Powers earned a spot on the All-Freshman team by serving as the Hatters’ primary mid-week starter. He has a 4-2 record in 11 starts on the year and a sparkling 2.70 ERA. That record came with starts against the likes of Florida State (twice), Miami, UCF and South Florida.

The Hatters also placed four players on the Atlantic Sun Academic All-Conference team. Those players were seniors Will Dorsey and Jake Boyd along with juniors Kurt Schluter and Mitchel Brennan. Dorsey was one of three unanimous selections to the team.

Dorsey, a native of Atlantic Beach, received his degree in Finance this spring while working in his fourth season as a member of the Hatters pitching rotation. He posted a 7-5 record on the year with a 3.18 ERA. He was named the outstanding senior Finance major by the Stetson business school.

Jake Boyd is a native of West Palm Beach and received his degree in Chemistry this spring. He was named the outstanding senior Chemistry student by the University. On the field, he has a 4-1 record with a 5.53 ERA in 27 relief appearances.

Brennan is a native of Orlando and is a two-time A-Sun Player of the Week winner this year. Brennan was named the outstanding junior Finance major this spring. He enters tournament play with a .288 batting average this year. He leads the Hatters with 16 doubles and three triples and also has three homers.

Schluter, a native of Jupiter, is also a Finance major. He has struggled through an injury marred season, but has a 5-3 overall record on the mound with a 5.69 ERA. On the field he is hitting .279 with a pair of doubles and nine RBI in just 14 starts.

Schluter will start on the mound for Stetson on Wednesday evening when the Hatters open the A-Sun Tournament against Belmont at 7 p.m. The opening day of play in the tournament will begin at 11 a.m. when second seeded USC Upstate faces fifth seed Mercer. No. 3 seek Kennesaw State will take on fourth seed Florida Gulf Coast in the afternoon game beginning at 3 p.m.

The tournament will continue with three games on Thursday and three more on Friday before the championship is decided at 1 p.m. on Saturday. All of the game will be available on A-Sun.tv with the exception of Saturday’s championship game, which will be carried by ESPN3.
