DeLand, FL - The Hatternauts scored four runs in the bottom of the seventh inning for a walk-off win, 7-6, against the Dunn Deals in the game two of the Hatter Series, Friday at Melching Field.  The win ties the series at one game a piece in the best three-out-of-five format.

After being shut out in the first game of the series, the Nauts offense came to life in the bottom of the first inning when sophomores Kevin Fagan and Patrick Mazeika came to the plate.  Fagan got things going in the lead-off spot with a base hit up the middle. After senior left-handed starter Austin Perez punched out junior shortstop Tyler Bocock, Mazeika doubled down the left field line. Fagan, who was running on the pitch, scored easily and Mazeika ended up at third when an errant throw went over the head of Deals' catcher Garrett Russini.

Freshman designated hitter Taylor Cockrell followed with run-scoring infield single for a 2-0 lead.

The Nauts were back at it in the second inning when freshman Eliot Shapleigh continued his Hatter Series hot hitting with a one-out double to left.  Freshman outfielder Jordan Schulz followed Shapleigh bad-hop RBI single past first baseman Josh Powers, making the score 3-0.

The Deals answered back in the third inning with a lead-off bunt base hit by freshman Dean Garabedian. Smith came to the plate with one out after freshman starter Mitchell Jordan caught junior outfielder Darby McCormick looking at a third strike, and singled sharply to left, putting runners at first and second. After a hard hit line drive out to right field by junior Kyle Pitts for the second out, Garrett Russini stepped to the plate and delivered an RBI single to right scoring Garabedian.

Smith also came around to score when right fielder Jordan's Schulz's throw was mishandled at third baseand trickled into the dug out, sending Russini all the way to third and making the score 3-2.  Mitchell Jordan got out of the jam by getting sophomore Wade McNabb to fly out to right.

The Deals took a 4-3 lead in the top of the fifth with a hit batter, back-to-back walks, and a two-run double by centerfielder Darby McCormick. They added to the lead with a two-run single by junior third baseman Kyle Pitts, making it 6-3.

The lead would stand up until the bottom of the seventh.  Closer junior Trey Norris got junior centerfielder Tanner Blackman to ground out for the first out before the Nauts' bats came to life again. Consecutive singles by Shapleigh and Schulz brought the tying run to the plate in freshman infielder Mitchell Piatnik. He delivered the big blow when he lined a double to left center scoring both Shapleigh and Schulz. Nauts' 2B Kevin Fagan then tied it up with a soft line drive over Smith's head that brought Piatnik home.

Fagan stole second, putting the winning run in scoring position.Bocock grounded out and moved Fagan to third, putting the winning run 90-feet away. The Deals intentionally walked Mazeika, bringing Taylor Cockrell to the plate. With Mazeika running on the pitch, Cockrell smoked a line drive down the left field line, scoring Fagan for the walk-off win.

The Hatternauts finished with 11 hits on the day with Fagan (2-4, 1RBI, 2 R), Cockrell (2-4, 2 RBI), Shapleigh (2-4, 2 R) and Schulz (3-3, 1 R) leading the way.  Redshirt freshman Frankie Fromano got the win with three up and three down in the top of the seventh inning with Norris getting the loss.

The Dunn Deals offensive stand-outs on the day were Smith (2-2, 1 R) and Garabedian (2-4, 2 R).

The Hatter Series continues Sunday, November 3rd with the 1st pitch at noon.
