Baseball Opens 2014 Season Friday vs. Ole Miss

Stetson opens the 2014 baseball season when the Hatters begin a three-game series with SEC power Ole Miss, 6:30 p.m., Friday at Melching Field.

The Hatters and Rebels will continue the series at 2 p.m., Saturday. The finale is schedule for a noon start on Sunday.

Stetson begins its 97th season of baseball on Friday, 35 of which have been helmed by head coach Pete Dunn. The recent American Baseball Coaches Association Hall of Fame inductee returns six everyday starters and the entire weekend starting rotation from last season. Among the returnees is sophomore first baseman/catcher Patrick Mazeika, the 2013 Atlantic Sun Conference Freshman of the Year. Mazeika batted .382 with three home runs and 33 RBI last season, earning consensus Freshman All-America honors.

The Rebels were 38-24 last season and appeared in NCAA Regionals for the 11th time in the last 13 seasons. Ole Miss returns six positional players and one weekend starting pitcher from the 2013 season. Head coach Mike Bianco is in his 14th season with the Rebels.

Pitching matchups for the weekend are set. Friday night will pit right-handers Chris Ellis for Ole Miss and Kurt Schluter for Stetson. A pair of southpaws will square off on Saturday as the Rebels send Christian Trent to the hill to face Stetson’s Austin Perez. The finale features right-handers Sam Smith of Ole Miss against the Hatters’ Josh Powers.

Former Atlanta Braves third baseman Chipper Jones will throw out the ceremonial first pitch prior to Friday’s game.

Single games tickets for the Florida State game on May 6 go on sale Wednesday April 2nd. Fans can secure their seats early through securing a block of at least 15 tickets or purchasing a 3 game mini-pack which includes Florida State or Miami plus an additional 2 games of their choice. The 3 game mini-pack starts at $30 for reserved seats and $20 for General Admission seating.
