The Stetson Hatters started the racing season Saturday morning on Lake Beresford with races against Temple and High Point University. Both of the guests had been training on Lake Beresford for spring break and the week of training cumulated with 2000m racing on a very nice day. Tempuratures started cool but quickly grew into the 60's with light northerly winds and bright sunny skies. Wind was a direct head wind of 5-8 mph with even conditions for all crews in each race. Wind ebbed and grew a few times during the morning but overall it was very favorable conditions.

Stetson was also coming off the week of spring break and like the other teams were a bit sore and had some blisters to deal with from the week of "two-a-days" plus conditioning. The Hatters raced very well under second year Head Coach Mark Wilson and came away with several wins from the day.

Racing to win for the Hatters was the Women's V8, the Women's V4, the Women's Light 4 and the Men's Pair. The Men's Varsity 4 raced a very deep and very strong team from Temple and came out a little short at the finish line after two races but raced long and well and had consistent splits through the course. The Men's Pair of Jack Ulriksen and Andrew Rouse won the event beating team mates David Nutting and Jackson Reddick by 15 seconds. High Point entered two young rowers in the event and they finished third.

On the women's side the Hatters looked very comfortable in the top boats but needed to really push in the second boats.

"All the women raced very well today," Wilson said. "The novice did great fitting into varsity seats and even with one practice in the four held there own and did well."

The Women's Light Four had not rowed together since last spring but they came out strong and raced well to beat High Point by 27 seconds. In the Varsity Four the Hatters also raced nicely and winning in a time of 9:05 and the second boat placed second in 9:47 and High Point was third in 10:19.

"I was very pleased with the V8 today but they need to know that the compitition will only get stronger and faster through the year so racing 100% is critical," Wilson said.

The Hatter Women finished in a time of 8:23 which was 34 seconds faster than High Point and 36 seconds faster than the Stetson number two boat.

The Hatters will have one week of training before the next race on March 15th against Wesleyan University of Middletown, Conn. Photos of the racing are located on the teams Smugmug account which can be found at www.stetsonrowing.smugmug.com.  Results can be found linked to this site and on www.row2k.com.
