Stetson University baseball coach Pete Dunn announced today that he has filled the vacancy on his coaching staff by hiring Josh Lopez as the programs volunteer assistant.

Lopez replaces Brian Pruitt, who left the Hatters after two seasons to become the head coach at Deland High School.

Lopez comes to Stetson from Palm Beach State College in Lake Worth where he has been an assistant for the last two seasons, helping that program to a junior college World Series appearance. That followed a stint in 2012 at Florida Christian College where he helped that team make an NCCAA World Series trip.

“We are extremely pleased to have Josh joining our staff,” Dunn said. “He brings college coaching experience, knowledge of the game and youthful enthusiasm to the program.”

No stranger to Stetson’s Melching Field, Lopez is a veteran of the Florida Collegiate League, having assisted former long-time Stetson assistant coach Rick Hall with the DeLand Suns in 2013.

“His coaching career has strong ties to Stetson,” Dunn said. “He first worked under the tutelage of Hatter Hall of Fame pitcher Tommy Hickox at Deltona High. In addition to serving as an assistant coach for the last two years at Palm Beach State, he also spent this summer coaching the prestigious Palm Beach Select travel team.”

A native of Deltona, Lopez attended Daytona State College before receiving his Bachelor’s degree in Sport and Fitness from UCF in 2010. He completed his Master’s in Recreation and Sport Sciences from Ohio University in 2013.

“In addition to some administrative duties, Josh will work with our outfielders, assist coach Mark Leavitt with the hitters and coach first base,” Dunn said.

“I feel very blessed and fortunate to have this opportunity,” Lopez said. “I look forward to learning from the staff, continuing to develop players and assisting the program in winning another Atlantic Sun Conference championship.”
