The Stetson men’s and women’s tennis teams will host a pair of matches this weekend, taking on ETSU on Thursday and USC Upstate on Saturday at the Mandy Stoll Tennis Center.
“This will be another challenging weekend of conference matches for both our men's and women's teams,” Stetson Director of Tennis Pierre Pilote said. “Both the men's and women's teams at ETSU and USC Upstate will be contenders for the conference championships this year.”
The Hatter men (13-1, 4-0) enter this weekend undefeated in conference play, coming off two big road wins against Kennesaw State and Mercer. Stetson will be looking for their first 5-0 start in conference play since 2008.
In order to do that, the Hatters will have beat ETSU (5-6, 1-1), who enters on a two-match losing streak. The Bucs are the six-time defending Atlantic Sun Conference champions, and were ranked as high as 64th in the nation as of last week. The match is set to begin at 12:00 p.m.
On the women’s side, Stetson (9-5, 4-0) enters on a two-match winning streak after defeating both Kennesaw State and Mercer this past week. They will look to take down ETSU (7-4, 2-0), who also won both of their conference matches this past weekend. The match is tentatively scheduled to begin at 4:00 p.m.
On Saturday, Stetson will take on USC Upstate. The Hatter women will play first, taking on the Spartans (8-5, 0-2) at 10:00 a.m. The Hatters have defeated the Spartans in their last four meetings.
The Hatter men will follow the women, taking on the Spartans (6-8, 0-2) at 2:00 p.m. Stetson won the last meeting between the two squads, defeating USC Upstate 4-3 last season in Spartanburg, S.C.
“We are probably the underdog in both matches,” Pilote said. “On the men's side, it is due to our youth and on the women's side due to injuries, but I know that our teams are looking forward to the challenges.”
