GAINESVILLE, Fla. - The Stetson women's tennis team continued fall competition on Thursday by opening play at the Bedford Cup in Gainesville. The Hatters won seven matches in both singles and doubles action.
The day opened with double play, and Stetson won three of its four contests. Senior Diana Bukajeva and sophomore Eveline Lepinay defeated Sablina/Kajiwara of Bethune-Cookman by a score of 8-3 the first round.
Senior Lindsey Cable and freshman Marta Gonzalez won 8-5 over Miller/Clayton of Florida Atlantic, while sophomore Andrea Crespo and senior MayaBlue Stauffer-MacDowell defeated Weymar/Cunningham of UNF 8-7 (8-6).
The three doubles pairs will play in the round of 16 on Friday.
Cable, Crespo, and Bukajeva all won first round matches in singles play, and Lepinay received a bye to the round of 32 on Friday.
Cable topped Clare Mendell of UCF 6-1, 6-4 and will challenge Maria Sablina of Bethune-Cookman in the next round. Crespo won 6-3, 6-0 against FGCU's Bettina Botha and moves on to play Kerrie Cartwright of Florida State. Bukajeva also advanced, beating Majlena Pederson of Florida State by a score of 6-3, 6-2. She will play Belinda Woolcock of Florida in the next round.
After dropping her first round match, Gonzalez won her singles consolation contest by a score of 6-4, 6-0 over Elysia Ortiz of Florida A&M.
"We had a solid first day of competition," Stetson Director of Tennis Pierre Pilote said. "Winning three of four doubles matches, with the only lost coming on a tie-breaker, shows how much our doubles have improved this fall. We had some good singles results as well."
