DeLand, Fla. - The Stetson women's tennis team (7-0, 2-0 Atlantic Sun) kept its 2011 unbeaten record intact with a dominating 7-0 shutout over visiting A-Sun rival USC Upstate (0-8, 0-1 A-Sun) at the Mandy Stoll Tennis Center on Thursday. The Hatters won all three doubles matches by perfect 8-0 scores and all six singles matches in straight sets, winning 72 of 81 total games along the way.
Stetson used the same six players throughout the match with freshman Lindsey Cable (Gainesville, Fla.) recording flawless 8-0 and 6-0, 6-0 wins in #3 doubles (with junior Shannon Gunning [Boca Raton, Fla.]) and #6 singles. The doubles win came against Catherine Estupinan and Samantha Kopsnyder while the singles win was over Kopsnyder. Fellow freshman Sierra Sullivan (Austin, Texas) did likewise, teaming with freshman MayaBlue Stauffer-MacDowell (Asheville, N.C.) for an 8-0 doubles win on Court 2 over Maria Tonani and Talia Rojas, then shutting out Estupinan 6-0, 6-0 on Court 5.
Stauffer-MacDowell defeated Rojas 6-2, 6-0 at #4 singles with a 6-2, 6-1 win over Tonani for Gunning on Court 3. Sophomore Carolina de los Santos (Montevideo, Uruguay) and senior Unnati Purushotham (Hyderabad, India) wrapped things up with 6-3, 6-1 (over Ana Sofia-Camberos) and 6-0, 6-2 (vs. Karen Martinez) victories at the top two slots in the lineup. Earlier during doubles, de los Santos and Purushotham blanked Sofia-Camberos and Martinez 8-0.
Stetson will host A-Sun foe Campbell at 2 p.m. Saturday in the second act of another tennis doubleheader at the Mandy Stoll Tennis Center. The Hatters-Camels men's match will be played at 10 a.m. Live Stats are available at GoHatters.com.
