Kennesaw, Ga. - Dominance from the top two positions in the lineup carried the Stetson women's tennis team (12-1, 4-1 Atlantic Sun) to an important 5-2 win at A-Sun rival Kennesaw State (13-3, 3-1 A-Sun) on Saturday. Sophomore Carolina de los Santos (Montevideo, Uruguay) and senior Unnati Purushotham (Hyderabad, India) were both double winners as the Hatters were victorious for the third time in as many days.
De los Santos and Purushotham, the A-Sun Preseason Doubles Team of the Year, sliced through Iesha Holton and Vera Shkundina 8-0 at #1 doubles to set the tone; athough KSU took the Court 2 match, the Lindsey Cable (Gainesville, Fla.)/Shannon Gunning (Boca Raton, Fla.) combo on Court 3 won the doubles point for the Hatters with an 8-6 victory over Agatha Palider and Therese Lagerkvist.
In singles action, de los Santos and Purushotham pulled off matching 6-0, 6-1 wins over Shkundina and Holton at the top two slots and freshman MayaBlue Stauffer-MacDowell (Asheville, N.C.) locked up the match for the Hatters with her 6-4, 7-5 triumph on Court 5 over Lagerkvist. Freshman Sierra Sullivan (Austin, Texas) delivered Stetson's final point by outlasting Palider 6-2, 5-7, 10-8 in a tiebreaker.
Stetson returns home to host Chattanooga at the Mandy Stoll Tennis Center on Wednesday. The match will begin at 2:30 p.m. with live scoring available at GoHatters.com.
