DeLand, Fla. - After sweeping three schools in Georgia (Georgia Southern, Mercer and Kennesaw State) last weekend, the Stetson women's tennis team (13-1) returned home to begin a three-match homestand against Tennessee foes on Wednesday. The Hatters picked up right where they left off, sweeping Chattanooga 7-0 at the Mandy Stoll Tennis Center. Four Hatters were double winners in straight sets against the Mocs (5-5).
Stetson quickly took the doubles point as sophomore A-Sun Player of the Week Carolina de los Santos (Montevideo, Uruguay) teamed with senior Unnati Purushotham (Hyderabad, India) for an 8-2 win on Court 1 and the Lindsey Cable (Gainesville, Fla.)/Shannon Gunning (Boca Raton, Fla.) duo did likewise on Court 3.
All four of these Hatters won in singles as well with Purushotham putting down Alexa Flynn 6-1, 6-1 at the #2 position for the biggest win. De los Santos beat Jenna Nurik 6-2, 6-3 on Court 1, Gunning won 6-4, 6-2 over Emily Hangstefer on Court 3, freshman MayaBlue Stauffer-MacDowell (Asheville, N.C.) knocked off Shaina Singh 7-6, 6-2 and Cable bounced Diana Zora 6-3, 6-3. The only match to go three sets saw freshman Sierra Sullivan (Austin, Texas) preserve the shutout with a 4-6, 6-1, 7-5 comeback win over Charlotte Bossy on Court 5.
A-Sun rivals Lipscomb and Belmont will be in town this week to face the Hatters. The Lady Bisons are up first at 1 p.m. Thursday with the Bruins next at 10 a.m. Saturday. Live Scoring will be available at GoHatters.com.
