Jacksonville, Fla. - The Stetson women's tennis team improved to 16-2 overall and 7-2 in Atlantic Sun Conference play with a 4-3 road win at defending conference champion North Florida (11-4, 6-2 A-Sun) on Friday. The win put the Hatters in position for one of the top three seeds in the upcoming A-Sun tournament, which the Hatters will host April 14-16.
Stetson struck first in doubles as sophomore Carolina de los Santos (Montevideo, Uruguay) and senior Unnati Purushotham (Hyderabad, India) blanked Aline Berkenbrock and Simona Weymar 8-0 at the top of the lineup; freshman Lindsey Cable (Gainesville, Fla.) and junior Shannon Gunning (Boca Raton, Fla.) followed up with an 8-5 win on Court 3 to secure a 1-0 lead in the match.
De los Santos set the tone for the singles proceedings as the 2010 A-Sun Freshman of the Year rolled through Berkenbrock, the defending A-Sun Player of the Year, 6-2, 6-2; freshman Sierra Sullivan (Austin, Texas) defeated Simona Weymar 6-1, 6-3 on Court 5 to put the Hatters one point from victory. Victoria Krook got UNF on the board with a straight set win, but Cable put the all-important fourth point on Stetson's side of the ledger with a hardfought 7-6, 7-5 win over Melinda Doak on Court 6. Danielle Day and Melanie Aguirre won the last two matches for the Ospreys to make the final margin 4-3.
The Stetson win avenged a defeat at the hands of UNF in the 2010 A-Sun tournament semifinals; the two squads may well meet again in the postseason two weeks from now at the Mandy Stoll Tennis Center. The Hatters will remain in the River City to close out the A-Sun schedule at 2 p.m. Saturday against Jacksonville.
