Jacksonville, Fla. - The Stetson women's tennis team concluded the Atlantic Sun Conference portion of its regular season schedule with a narrow 4-3 loss at Jacksonville on Saturday. The Hatters dropped to 16-3 overall and finished 7-3 in the A-Sun while the Dolphins improve to 15-4 overall and 6-3 in the A-Sun pending their final match against local rival UNF.
Stetson claimed the doubles point with wins from the Lindsey Cable (Gainesville, Fla.)/Shannon Gunning (Boca Raton, Fla.) and Carolina de los Santos (Montevideo, Uruguay)/Unnati Purushotham (Hyderabad, India) pairs. The former won 8-4 and the latter 9-7 to put the Hatters up 1-0 going to the singles matches.
Host Jacksonville would get the better of Stetson in four of the six singles matches, however, to claim the win. Eve Castaing, Natalia Marques Melibeu and Virginia Iwinski won in straight sets for JU while Flavia Nagayama clinched the match for her team with a 6-4, 3-6, 6-1 win over Gunning in three sets. Cable and Purushotham earned singles wins for Stetson and were double winners on the day.
The Hatters will await word of their seed for the A-Sun tournament April 14-16 at the Mandy Stoll Tennis Center, but in the meantime they will travel to 40th-ranked USF at 2 p.m. Friday before hosting UCF at 11 a.m. Saturday to conclude the regular season.
