Tampa, Fla. - Sophomore Jen Miller (Tampa, Fla.) picked up a singles win in her hometown, but that was the extent of Stetson's (16-4) success as the Hatters took a 6-1 loss in women's tennis at 44th-ranked USF on Friday. The tough Bulls lineup featured three nationally ranked singles players and a top 70 doubles duo.
USF and the #68 Janette Bejlkova/Loreta Alonso Martinez combination took the doubles point against a Stetson lineup slightly shuffled by Head Coach Sasha Schmid. With Miller making the trip to her native Tampa instead of senior Unnati Purushotham, the former paired with freshman MayaBlue Stauffer-MacDowell (Asheville, N.C.) on Court 2. Freshman Lindsey Cable (Gainesville, Fla.) and junior Shannon Gunning (Boca Raton, Fla.) teamed up on Court 3 and sophomore Carolina de los Santos (Montevideo, Uruguay) paired with freshman Sierra Sullivan (Austin, Texas) on Court 1.
The Bulls used the nationally ranked singles trio of Irene Rehberger (#35), Ecaterina Vasenina (#114) and Bejlkova (#67) to put the match away relatively quickly, although de los Santos took Rehberger to a tiebreak in the first set at the #1 slot. Miller got Stetson its point on Court 6 with a 6-3, 6-1 win over Katherine Pyne.
The Hatters conclude the regular season at 11 a.m. Saturday as local rival UCF visits the Mandy Stoll Tennis Center. Purushotham, Stetson's lone upperclasswoman, will be honored on Senior Day.
