DeLand, Fla. - The fourth-seeded Stetson women's tennis team (17-5) began its A-Sun Tournament with a bang, rolling through fifth-seeded Kennesaw State (18-6) 4-0 in a Thursday morning quarterfinal match at the Mandy Stoll Tennis Center. Freshman Lindsey Cable (Gainesville, Fla.) and junior Shannon Gunning (Boca Raton, Fla.) were double winners with Gunning clinching the match.
Sophomore Carolina de los Santos (Montevideo, Uruguay) and senior Unnati Purushotham (Hyderabad, India) began the doubles portion with an 8-0 shutout of Vera Shkundina and Ayano Tanaka on Court 1; the Owls would take the Court 2 match to set up a winner-take-all affair on Court 3. There, Cable and Gunning outlasted Agatha Palider and Therese Lagerkvist 8-4 to put Stetson up 1-0 in the match.
Cable shut out Mackenzie Swindall 6-0, 6-0 on Court 6 to quickly make it 2-0 Hatters; freshman Sierra Sullivan (Austin, Texas) then brought Stetson within one point of victory by beating Lagerkvist 6-3, 6-3 on Court 4. Finally it was Gunning's turn for a straight set victory, dropping Palider 6-3, 6-1 on Court 4 to end the match at 4-0 Stetson. The three other singles matches were left unfinished due to time constraints.
With the victory, Stetson advances to tomorrow morning's semifinal round, where it will face top-seeded ETSU, the A-Sun regular season champions, at 9 a.m. Live scoring and live video are available throughout the A-Sun Championships at GoHatters.com.
