St. Augustine, Fla. - The Stetson women's tennis team improved to 2-0 on the season with a 6-1 road win over Flagler, the 13th-ranked squad in NCAA Division II, Monday afternoon. Results from the match did not become available until Tuesday morning. Five Hatters earned both singles and doubles wins.
The Hatters won on all three doubles courts to take the early 1-0 lead in the match. Junior Sara Lazarevic (Calgary, Alta.) and sophomore MayaBlue Stauffer-MacDowell (Asheville, N.C.) rolled through Rachel Gould and Barbora Sebkova 8-1 at the top of the lineup to set the tone while identical 8-4 wins were earned for the Hatters by sophomore Lindsey Cable (Gainesville, Fla.) and senior Shannon Gunning (Boca Raton, Fla.) as well as sophomore Diana Bukajeva (Riga, Latvia) and junior Jen Miller (Tampa, Fla.).
Five of the six singles matches went to the Hatters in straight sets with Cable and Miller both posting perfect 6-0 wins on Courts 5 and 6, respectively; they earned mirror image 6-4, 6-0 victories. At the top of the lineup, Lazarevic took care of Veronica Figueroa 6-2, 6-2 with Gunning (6-2, 6-4 on Court 2) and Bukajeva (6-4, 6-2 on Court 4) rising to the challenge of their Saints foes. Sebkova earned Flagler's lone point of the match.
Stetson takes a two-match swing through the Palmetto State this weekend, starting at 1:00 pm Friday at South Carolina State before visiting #70 College of Charleston at 1:00 pm Sunday.
