Nashville, Tenn. - The Stetson women's tennis team put an end to its four-match losing streak Friday afternoon, rolling to a 6-1 win at Belmont in Atlantic Sun Conference action. The Hatters improved to 12-6 overall and 5-3 in A-Sun play, clinching a berth in next weekend's conference tournament. The Bruins fell to 5-12, 2-6 A-Sun and were eliminated from contention for the postseason.
Sophomore Lindsey Cable (Gainesville, Fla.) and senior Shannon Gunning (Boca Raton, Fla.) set the tone for the day with an 8-0 shutout of Carolyn Caire and Natalia Nunes at #3 doubles. The Hatters would sweep all three doubles matches to go up 1-0 on the scoreboard as the pairs of Sara Lazarevic (Calgary, Alta.)/MayaBlue Stauffer-MacDowell (Asheville, N.C.) and Diana Bukajeva (Riga, Latvia)/Jen Miller (Tampa, Fla.) earned matching 8-6 victories on the other two courts.
Stetson earned five straight set singles victories to put the Bruins away early. Cable, Gunning and Miller all blanked their foes 6-0 in the opening set while Bukajeva dropped just two games total in a 6-1, 6-1 win over Catherine Holliday on Court 3. Gunning, who moved up to #1 singles as Lazarevic sat out the second half of the proceedings, clinched the victory with a 6-0, 6-2 triumph over Nikki Maciel.
"The doubles matches started our momentum and we took that into singles," said Stetson Associate Head Coach Chastity Bradley. "All our players worked hard out there and played good matches."
The Hatters finish the regular season tomorrow at Lipscomb. The match is slated to start at 10:00 am ET (9:00 am local CT).
