WINSTON-SALEM, N.C. - Four Hatters won singles matches and two doubles pairs advanced to semifinal contests as the Stetson women's tennis team played in the first day of competition of the Wake Forest Invite on Friday.
"The team performed very well today, especially in doubles," Stetson Director of Tennis Pierre Pilote said. "Diana and Isabella played their best doubles of the fall season so far. The level of competition is quite high at this event, and the team is loving the challenge."
Senior Diana Bukajeva defeated Giulia Andreazza of ETSU 6-1, 6-1 in the B bracket on Friday. She advanced to take on Nell Gaigher of Campbell in the quarterfinals on Saturday.
Sophomore Eveline Lepinay topped Macy Vonderschmidt of Charlotte by a score of 6-3, 6-3 in the C bracket. She will next play Yasmin Franco of UNC Greensboro in quarterfinal action on Saturday.
Freshmen Carolina Meregalli and Brittany Hill also won their singles matches on Friday. The former won 6-2, 6-0 over Brigita Bercyte of Wake Forest in the E bracket, while the latter topped Monica Aguado of Winthrop 6-3, 6-3 in the F bracket.
Bukajeva teamed with freshman Isabella Fernandez in doubles A bracket. The duo won 8-4 against Vonderschmidt/Grosellius of Charlotte, and then topped Choo/Gerbasi of ETSU by a score of 8-5. The doubles pair will take on Gardiner/Zhang of Wake Forest in the semifinals.
Sophomore Andrea Crespo and senior MayaBlue Stauffer-MacDowell advanced to the semis of the B doubles bracket. They won 8-7(2) against Crouser/Stein of Davidson in the first round. They then defeated Galstruk/Gaudreault of Maryland 8-6 to advance to take on Andreazza/Brumit of ETSU on Saturday.
Meregalli and freshman Marta Gonzalez won 8-4 over Kanii/Kanii in round one of the C doubles bracket, but then dropped their round two match. The duo will play against Williams/Gitman of Richmond in the consolation bracket.
