After weeks of waiting, and another postponement on Saturday, the Stetson women’s tennis team will finally open up the home portion of their 2014 schedule, Sunday, Feb. 9 at 12:00 p.m. at the Mandy Stoll Tennis Center, as they take on Florida International.
The originally scheduled contest on Saturday at 12:00 p.m. was postponed to due inclement weather.
The Hatters will return to action after a three-week layoff in which they had back-to-back matches cancelled because of inclement weather. Last weekend’s originally scheduled home opener with South Alabama was not played because of hazardous travel conditions caused by winter weather in the southeast. Jan. 25th’s match at Georgia Southern was also crossed off the schedule because of the poor weather in Statesboro, Ga. that weekend.
“The team has been practicing at a high level of intensity for the past two weeks,” said Stetson Director of Tennis Pierre Pilote. “Even though the practices have been very productive and fun, the team is really looking forward to playing in real competition.”
The last time Pilote’s squad took to the courts was back on Jan. 19, when Stetson (1-1), split matches with No. 24 Florida State (2-4) and Florida A&M (4-0), in Tallahassee.
The Hatters will take on a Florida International squad that will be coming to DeLand straight from its match with North Florida in Jacksonville on Friday. The Panthers stand at 1-0 heading into this weekend’s action after having defeated Florida Gulf Coast 4-3, last weekend in Fort Myers.
“We will need to start strong against a very good FIU team,” Pilote explained. “They are a deep squad with excellent players from top to bottom.”
The 2014 home opener between FIU and Stetson is scheduled to get underway at 12:00 p.m. The first 20 fans in attendance will receive a ‘Lady Hatter’ Loom Bracelet. Live results, the @StetsonTennis Twitter feed, and Hat-Alerts will also be available for in-match updates.
