HIGHLAND HEIGHTS, Ky. – The Stetson University women’s tennis team won its fifth straight match and fourth in a row against an A-Sun opponent, defeating Northern Kentucky 6-1, Saturday on its home courts.
The Hatters (15-5, 5-3) won five of six singles matches and all three doubles, just hours after defeating Lipcsomb (4-1) in Nashville, the day before.
"The ladies played an awesome match today considering the amount of sleep they had, due to our late arrival in Cincinnati earlier this morning,” said Director of Stetson Tennis Pierre Pilote. “Most felt that they could have played better but under the circumstances, it was a great overall performance”
Saturday’s match with the Norse started with a doubles sweep, as Diana Bukajeva/MayaBlue Stauffer-McDowell (Court No. 1), Andrea Crespo/Isabella Fernandez (No. 2) and Lindsey Cable/Eveline Lepinay (No. 3) were all victorious, making it 1-0 Stetson heading into singles play.
Lepinay got things started on court No. 5 with a 6-1, 6-0 decision to make it 2-0. Cable’s win (6-0, 6-3) on court No. 6 extended the Stetson lead to 3-0, while Fernandez’s 6-4, 6-3 triumph on No. 3, clinched the Hatter victory at 4-0.
Wins from Stauffer-MacDowell (6-1, 5-7, 6-3) on court No. 4 and Crespo (7-6 (7), 7-6 (5)) on No. 2 closed out the road competition with a final score of 6-1 in Stetson’s favor. The lone Norse victory came on court No. 1 as NKU’s Maria Voscekova outlasted Bukajeva 7-5, 7-5.
The Hatters have now had win streaks this season of five and 10 matches, their latest coming nearly almost all against conference opponents. Stetson has defeated Mercer, Kennesaw State, SUNY Onenta, Lipscomb and Northern Kentucky in just an eight day span.
Pilote’s crew returns to the Sunshine State, where they will take on UCF for a non-conference tilt, Thursday, Apr. 10 at 2 p.m. in Orlando. The Hatters match with the Knights will be their last regular season match before the A-Sun Championship, scheduled for Apr. 18-20 at North Florida.
