Visiting USC Upstate defeated Stetson 3-0 (25-19, 25-23, 25-14) in an Atlantic Sun Conference volleyball match Friday evening at the Edmunds Center.

USC Upstate improved to 5-9 overall, 1-2 in the A-Sun.  Stetson dropped its ninth straight match and fell to 3-17, 0-4.

Junior Kaley Melville led all hitters with 18 kills on the night, while committing only three errors and posting a .429 attack percentage.  Freshman Cailyn Prewitt added nine kills, but no other Hatter had more than three.

"I was really pleased with Kaley Melville," Stetson head coach Tim Loesch said.  "She had another great match and did pretty much everything we asked.  I thought Cailyn Prewitt did some good things on the outside for us.  And Kayla Weller did a pretty good job of following the game plan.  But again everyone else did not contribute as much as we needed."

Stetson's best opportunity in the match came in the second set.  The Hatters hit .289 in the frame and led 19-14 at one point, but the Spartans finished on an 11-4 run to take a 2-0 lead in the match.

"We almost had a breakthrough in game two," Loesch said.  We figured some things out strategically and we were able to execute.  But down the stretch we made some unforced errors and kind of gave that one away."

Monique Russell picked up nine digs, leaving her just 16 shy of breaking the school record.

"Tomorrow's a new day, hopefully we will play a cleaner game and take care of our side of the net," Loesch said.

The Hatters will look to rebound on Saturday as Stetson will host ETSU at 3 p.m. at the Edmunds Center.
