Harrisonburg, Va. - The Stetson volleyball team (0-1) put on a strong battle after intermission but ultimately was swept 25-17, 25-12, 28-26 by host James Madison (1-0) in the season opener for each team Friday evening at the JMU Classic. Sophomore libero Monique Russell (Phoenix, Ariz.) led all players in the match with a career-high 17 digs for the Hatters.
JMU, which out-hit Stetson .287 to .057 in Sinclair Gymnasium tonight, used a strong and precise attack to take a 2-0 lead into the break, but the Hatters came back in the third set with a strong effort. Neither team led by more than three points and Stetson served for set point twice but in the end Lindsay Callahan and Jessica Zeroual finished the 28-26 win for the Dukes with back-to-back kills.
Freshman outside hitter Kaley Melville (New Germany, Minn.) knocked down six kills without an error and tallied seven digs in her collegiate debut while sophomore setter Kelli Carneal (Fredericksburg, Va.) handed out 16 assists in her return to her native Virginia.
Danielle Erb led all players with 13 kills for JMU with Callahan reaching double figures as well with 10 kills. Lauren Fanelli (23 assists, nine digs), Megan Wiechmann (16 assists), Natalie Abel (13 digs) and Holly Wall (13 digs) also had strong statistical nights for the Dukes; Zeroual notched nine kills and six blocks.
Stetson completes play at the JMU Classic tomorrow, taking on Davidson at 10:00 am and UNC Asheville at 5 pm. Davidson swept UNCA 3-0 in their Friday match. Live Stats are available at GoHatters.com and JMUSports.com.
