DeLand, Fla. - The Stetson volleyball team (1-14) played a home match at the Edmunds Center for the first time in three weeks, but the friendly surroundings did not lead to a victory as visiting Jacksonville (8-8) swept the Hatters 25-19, 25-16, 25-16. Freshman middle blocker Ellen Hawks (Austin, Texas) hit .467 with eight kills and three blocks to lead the Hatters. This match was considered a non-conference affair and did not count in the Atlantic Sun Conference standings.
Jacksonville's relentless attack set a pace with which the Hatters could not keep up as the Dolphins out-hit Stetson .330 to .131 on the afternoon. Senior setter Megan Stewart (St. Augustine, Fla.) received her first start of the season and recorded a near double-double (10 assists, eight digs). Junior outside hitter Kaylee Ream (Venice, Fla.) finished with six kills and six digs while sophomore libero Monique Russell (Phoenix, Ariz.) led the team defensively with 13 digs.
Kathryn Kane's 11-kill, 14-dig double-double led Jacksonville to the win with Alison Loeppky adding 11 kills of her own. Kendall Courtney (42 assists) and Ashley August (15 digs) also put up top stat lines for JU.
The Hatters will be back in action Tuesday at 6:30 pm as they head south to Boca Raton to take on Florida Atlantic. This will be the second match of the season between the two teams as the Owls defeated Stetson in four sets at the Edmunds Center on September 3.
