DeLand, Fla. - Freshman outside hitter Kaley Melville (New Germany, Minn.) and junior outside hitter Kaylee Ream (Venice, Fla.) each recorded double-doubles and career highs in kills, but the Stetson volleyball team dropped to 1-20 overall and 0-6 in Atlantic Sun action with a five-set loss to visiting Kennesaw State (12-9, 5-1 A-Sun) at the Edmunds Center on Saturday. Melville had 18 kills and 17 digs while Ream had 16 kills and 17 digs. Set scores were 23-25, 25-18, 21-25, 25-13, 15-12 for KSU.
Stetson extended a match to five sets for the first time since Sept. 25, 2009 at North Florida, 37 matches and more than a year ago. The Hatters came out determined after a strong effort last night against Mercer, taking the first set and managing to pick themselves up after KSU tied the match. Ultimately the Owls, the current second place team in the A-Sun standings, were able to rally from a 2-1 deficit to escape with the win.
Melville reached double-double status for the seventh time in her freshman season while Ream, who hit double figures in kills for the first time since her rookie year of 2008, has recently emerged defensively with 52 digs in the last three matches. Sophomore setter Kelli Carneal (Fredericksburg, Va.) handed out 38 assists to go along with six kills and five digs.
Sophomore libero Monique Russell (Phoenix, Ariz.) continued her assault on the Stetson single-season record book with 25 digs, her ninth 20-dig match in 2010. Russell now has 329 digs on the season, just 12 shy of Kira Smedley's 10th place total from the 2002 campaign.
Sabrita Gulley collected 17 kills and Alyssa Lang added a 17-dig, 13-kill double-double to lead Kennesaw State to the win. Owls setter Sara Metroka tallied 43 assists, 12 digs and five kills while libero Camille Pedraza had 21 digs and four service aces. Middle blocker Holly Knight finished with nine kills, nine blocks and three aces.
